The night before Halloween (Halloween Eve?) my youngest son (Erik) asked me to carve his pumpkin with the design he had drawn at school earlier that day.
So later that evening when the house was quiet I grabbed some traditional squash carving instruments, a squash and a fine bourbon barrel aged porter. With the design in hand I set up in front of the television in search of a campy horror movie to set the tone. Disappointed in my viewing options I settled on the Matrix (the first one). I tuned in right before the scene where Neo has his mouth sealed by Agent Smith and I thought... "Hey, I wonder if I can carve that?!".
The following morning Erik informed me that my carving was not even close to his original design. Instead of describing the scene from an R rated movie I decided to explain to him that art is a matter of perception and interpretation and the carving was how I interpreted his drawing.
